The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

While Vought provided no details on which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been distributed within that agency. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by the public and pledged to contest the moves in court.

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is not expected to be resolved before then.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.
