Unidentified Magenta Sludge on Isolated Tasmanian Shoreline Spurs Fears of Potential Phytoplankton Proliferation

Agencies in the island state are striving to determine a pink slime that has materialized on a isolated coast, with certain experts worried it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.

Extensive Occurrence Across Coastline

The pink-tinged sludge materialized across a stretch of Randalls Bay about 60km south of the city. A similar sludge has also been documented on sections of a nearby shore and Little Taylors Bay.

"So the state needs to send a firm alert here, the authorities and the EPA need to react to this. We need to study the samples we've gathered and we need to put word out the people here," she said.

An environmental foundation has documented dead octopus and expired organisms washing ashore, with a veteran activist labeling the circumstances as an "environmental emergency" and urging the state premier to visit and "lead the response that government must be undertaking".
